The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Armor) Patrick Henry Tansey, Jr. (ASN: 0-23915), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Executive Officer of the 21st Armored Infantry Battalion, 11th Armored Division, in action against the enemy in the European Theater of Operations, in 1945. Major Tansey was called forward to assume command after the battalion commander was injured. While under intense enemy fire, he recognized the battalion was out of control, and by personal direction launched a successful attack on the *****. On another occasion when tanks and Infantry became temporarily out of control and were fighting each other, Major Tansey, in full view of enemy snipers and machine guns, personally reorganized the attack. Climbing on a tank under a barrage of fire, he calmly gave radio instructions to other tanks. Through his leadership and disregard of personal safety, he contributed greatly to the capture of ******. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Tansey, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
