The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) David Streger, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 473d Infantry Regiment, 92d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy, on 14 April 1945. The ammunition supply of advancing infantry forces was exhausted against a viciously opposing foe. When 60-mm. mortar support of two companies ceased, the attack was stalled. Captain Streger decided to risk running a vehicle full of ammunition to the troops on a road which was still within mortar and machine gun range of the enemy. In unhesitating disregard for his own life. Captain Streger loaded a jeep and, securing a volunteer driver, proceeded through heavy enemy mortar and sniper fire to the stalled troops. His gallant action restored the offensive to the troops and is a high tribute to his ability as a soldier in the United States Army.
