The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Herman Stein (ASN: 0-50312), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3rd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 38th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Sanjung-ni, Korea, on 4 February 1951. His company was given the mission of covering the battalion withdrawal out of a surrounded position approximately four miles inside enemy lines. He placed himself with his lead platoon and started attacking Hill 303. This platoon captured the hill and killed 30 of the enemy blocking the withdrawal of the battalion. Upon loss of this position the enemy reacted immediately, pouring a heavy mortar barrage on the remainder of the company which was advancing. Being without communications with the remainder of his company he selected a firing position and killed the enemy mortar observer. He was then brought under fire from an enemy machine gun at a range of about 200 yards. He quickly knocked out the enemy weapon by killing the gunner and wounding the rest of the crew. Although subjected to withering small arms and automatic weapons fire he continued to fire at the enemy as they attempted to get the machine gun back into action. Upon the arrival of the remainder of his company, Captain Stein, continuing to display complete disregard for personal safety, began assisting and treating the wounded. His company effected approximately 120 casualties upon the enemy. Captain Stein’s courageous action, devotion to duty, and exemplary leadership reflect the greatest credit on himself and the United States Infantry.
