The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Donald E. Rowlands (ASN: 0-1310881), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Service Company, 442d Regimental Combat Team, 92d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 17 October 1944, in France. When a company was in urgent need of ammunition supplies, First Lieutenant Rowlands gathered the supplies of a reserve company and personally delivered the ammunition. Upon returning with his jeep, First Lieutenant Rowlands, disregarding his personal safety, stopped his jeep midst an enemy barrage and evacuated a wounded man and a litter squad out of the impact area. Subsequently when he was wounded, First Lieutenant Rowlands refused evacuation until he issued complete orders on the supply plan to his assistant. His courage and devotion to duty are in accordance with the United States Army’s best traditions.
