First Lieutenant (Infantry) Nelson Paul Monson (ASN: 0-23996), United States Army, was captured by German forces during fighting in Europe on or about 11 June 1944, and was held as a Prisoner of War until his successful escape from captivity early in 1945. The Russians picked him up by way of the Ukraine and repatriated him to U.S. jurisdiction in Naples.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Nelson Paul Monson (ASN: 0-23996), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment (Separate), in action against the enemy in the European Theater of Operations, in 1944. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Monson, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
