The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Patrick J. Moroney, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 29th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in ****, on 24 February 1945. On that date, near *****, a soldier was wounded seriously by an enemy mine and needed immediate attention. To evacuate the casualty was a hazardous undertaking as he lay well within a field of uncharted mines. Nevertheless, Sergeant Moroney, without hesitation, entered the deadly field and successfully evacuated the seriously wounded man to a place of safety. Sergeant Moroney’s timely actions undoubtedly saved the wounded man’s life. Such actions reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
