The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Dorrell W. Moore, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery A, 493d Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 12th Armored Division, in action against the enemy on 18 January 1945 in the vicinity of Herlisheim, France. When the officer in command of his crew was wounded, Corporal Moore, a member of a forward observer team supporting the 17th Armored Infantry Battalion, carried the wounded officer over open terrain under heavy enemy fire to a place of safety. He then returned, took charge of the crew and continued to support the infantry with timely and accurate artillery fire until he was seriously wounded when his position was overrun by the enemy. His courage and devotion to duty was an outstanding example to the officers and enlisted men of both battalions. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
