The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) George Gabriel Martin (ASN: 0-1310360), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 442d Regimental Combat Team, 92d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 April 1945, in Italy. First Lieutenant Martin, a platoon leader, led three of his men down the reverse side of a newly-captured slope to locate hostile emplacements. They spotted enemy positions half way down the hill and dauntlessly attacked with their rifles and hand grenades so skillfully that 7 of the well-armed foe were killed, 20 captured, and 15 routed. First Lieutenant Martin personally silenced two positions with accurate fire from his carbine and forced 4 enemy soldiers to surrender. He then directed such telling fire against the now-retreating foe that several more Germans were wounded and 4 machine guns, 2 automatic rifles, 9 rifles, 1 mortar, and a considerable amount of ammunition was captured. First Lieutenant Martin’s inspiring combat leadership reflects high merit on the traditions of the United States Army.
