The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Haywood E. Journigan, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 76th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany on 7 April 1945. During the attack on the town of Helsa, Germany, Private Journigan’s squad entered a house where it was subjected to heavy enemy bazooka, automatic and small arms fire. The enemy attempted to enter the house but was prevented by Private Journigan who protected his squad as it moved to the upper floor of the structure. Wounded in the leg, Sergeant Journigan staved off the enemy with his automatic rifle while backing up the stairs. He continued to protect the area until the enemy was disposed of by assistance from the remainder of his platoon. His gallant actions and his intrepid stand in the face of enemy fire reflect great credit upon himself and exemplify the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
