The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technician Fifth Grade Edward Collins (ASN: 31159559), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as a Medical Aidman with Company E, 393d Infantry Regiment, 99th Infantry Division, on 30 January 1945, in Belgium. As Company E moved into the attack through the Ardennes Forest, heavy enemy fire pinned down the entire company. The Company Commander, going forward to determine the next moves, was seriously wounded along with three others. On the cry of “Medic,” Corporal Collins unhesitatingly moved through the deep snow, completely exposed, until reaching the group. Fearlessly working on the men as he reached them, he completely disregarded the enemy display of arms. While laboring over the Company Commander, he was mortally wounded. His gallantry and complete devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
