The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Richard K. Chinen (ASN: 30105515), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 442d Regimental Combat Team, 92d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 5 April and 6 April 1945, in Italy. When casualties became numerous, Technician Fifth Grade Chinen and two others voluntarily attached themselves as litter bearers to a rifle company. During the two days of heated engagements, disregarding enemy fire and minefields, he evacuated forty five wounded comrades and eight Germans through rugged mountainous paths to the aid station. His gallant action and devotion to duty were an inspiration to his comrades and a distinct credit to the United States Army.
