The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant John C. Brady (ASN: 33367345), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 31st Infantry Division on Mapia Islands, Netherlands East Indies, on 16 November 1944. When the enemy in well concealed positions suddenly opened fire at close range with automatic weapons on a group who were attempting to administer aid to and evacuate casualties, Staff Sergeant Brady, quickly and calmly analyzing the situation, gave careful and specific instructions to each member of his squad. Then with complete disregard for his own safety, he courageously led the attack under the constant heavy fire directly into the enemy strong point, continuing to control the movement of each man and succeeded in killing the enemy and capturing several automatic weapons. This act reflects great credit upon Staff Sergeant Brady and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service.
