The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant William R. Moon (ASN: 34517116), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2nd Battalion, 302d Infantry Regiment, 94th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany, on 21 February 1945. In the attack on Oberlouken, Germany, accurate fire from an enemy mortar caused heavy casualties. Leading a three man patrol, he advanced on the position and after reaching a point 50 yards from the emplacement, was challenged by an enemy sentry. Quickly disposing of him, he personally stormed the position, destroyed the gun, and captured the crew manning it. Returning to friendly lines, he spotted an enemy mine laying detail of three men. Turning the prisoners over to his men, he maneuvered toward the enemy and with accurate fire killed the three Germans. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Moon, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
