The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Stanton P. Kunzi (ASN: 0-1019315), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 259th Infantry Regiment, 65th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Egelfingen, Germany, on 3 May 1945. Given the mission of reconnoitering the Regimental front along the Inns River, First Lieutenant Kunzi, Company A Executive Officer, led a ten-man patrol on a series of daring exploits. Boldly moving through enemy territory, First Lieutenant Kunzi and his men surrounded and forced the surrender of a town and its garrison, seized a German vehicle, and proceeding with speed, attacked a roadblock defended by superior numbers. They routed fifteen defenders after inflicting casualties. With the patrol, First Lieutenant Kunzi then moved into Saban, Austria, capture six SS-men, disarmed forty guards to liberate 700 prisoners of war, and, after establishing a Command Post in the city, collected vast amounts of German ordnance material. After being subjected to artillery fire and strafed by a hostile plane, he directed a search of the surrounding area. First Lieutenant Kunzi then returned across the Inns Rive with his prisoners and selected future crossing sites. His aggressiveness, outstanding initiative, and courageous leadership reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
