The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Sidney E. Iverson (ASN: 0-314151), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 3d Battalion, 276th Infantry Regiment, 70th Infantry Division, from 10 January to 14 January and from 21 February to 8 March 1945, at Zinsweiler and Forbach, France. At Zinsweiler, despite difficult winter conditions and enemy shelling, Colonel Iverson made personal reconnaissance within 100 yards of the entrenched enemy. When his battalion attacked in the Lichtenberg Forest, Colonel Iverson remained forward under concentrated artillery fire to direct the operation. His skillful leadership resulted in the capture of the battalion’s objective with a minimum of casualties. In the woods northeast of Forbach, he disregarded artillery, mortar and small arms fire, and again reconnoitered ground within 100 yards of strong hostile positions. Colonel Iverson’s courageous actions and complete devotion to his command set an exemplary standard of military conduct.
