The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Eldridge Ira Hutto (ASN: 14085741), United States Army, for gallantry in action at Saarlautern, Germany on 16 March 1945. While reconnoitering a possible route of advance for his squad in Saarlautern. Staff Sergeant Hutto was severally wounded by machine-gun fire. Despite his profusely bleeding wound, he completed his reconnaissance, returned to his squad, and, in his determination to direct the advance of his men, refused all medical aid. In the advance, Sergeant Hutto was killed by fragments from an .88-mm artillery burst, but his men, inspired by the fortitude and outstanding valor of their leader, carried on in his name and gained their objective. Sergeant Hutto’s determination in spite of his painful wounds and his devotion to duty reflect the greatest credit upon himself and the military service.
