The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Daniel A. Hope, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Battery, 493d Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 12th Armored Division, in action against the enemy on 23 April 1945 in the vicinity of Bopfingen, Germany. Private First Class Hope, bow-gunner in a tank, was in a convoy of ordnance and supply vehicles. While passing through a wooded area the column was fired on by a concealed enemy automatic weapon resulting in the wounding of one officer and halting the column. With complete disregard for his own safety, he left the shelter of his tank and entered the woods alone. Locating the foxhole from which the weapon was being fired, Private First Class Hope killed two German soldiers and captured the automatic weapon. His actions prevented further injury to friendly personnel and permitted the column to proceed. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
