The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Melvin G. Emde (ASN: 37744083), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company M, 274th Infantry Regiment, 70th Infantry Division, on 8 March 1945, near Forbach, France. While attempting to aid an officer who had been wounded by an enemy mine, Private First Class Emde detonated a second mine which blew off his left foot, lacerated both hands, and wounded a comrade. Despite his serious wounds, he assisted both men to a vehicle and drove to the nearest aid station. His exemplary fortitude and heroism at a time when prompt action was vital insured medical attention for his seriously wounded comrades.
