The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Wayne L. Diltz (ASN: 0-1823273), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 94th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany. During the period 17 March 1945 to 21 March 1945, Lieutenant Diltz distinguished himself on numerous occasions. Discovering a well camouflaged self-propelled gun covering the route of attack, he calmly maneuvered his tank destroyer in position and destroyed the gun and crew. Sustaining painful wounds he refused to be evacuated and continued to lead his platoon in the fierce assault. During the intense action his platoon destroyed 6 ammunition trucks, killed or captured a hundred enemy and was instrumental in the reduction and capture of a garrison manned by 1,500 Germans. His initiative and courageous devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
