Richard Cowherd graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1944. He was mortally wounded within a year of graduation, only three months after his Division entered combat in the European Theater of Operations.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Cavalry) Richard Mansur Cowherd (ASN: 0-26569), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Troop C, 3d Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized), 13th Armored Division, in action against the enemy in the European Theater of Operations, on 21 April 1945. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Cowherd, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
