The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Wallace R. Cheves (ASN: 0-362598), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Regimental Headquarters, 274th Infantry Regiment, 70th Infantry Division. On 6 January 1945, Lieutenant Colonel Cheves commanded a battalion in an attack on Wingen, France. Handicapped by treacherous terrain and tired, weary troops who had been without rest for sixty hours, Lieutenant Colonel Cheves by his initiative and perseverance had his battalion ready for the attack. Operating from his Observation Post which was constantly riddled by machine gun fire, Lieutenant Colonel Cheves, although sick and refusing to be evacuated, made sound tactical decisions which were of prime importance during the attack. When Company F became disorganized due to the loss of their officers, Lieutenant Colonel Cheves personally exposed himself to enemy fire to reorganize the Company and repel a heavy enemy counter attack. By his quick action he saved the battalion from a breakthrough, severe casualties, and becoming isolated. The courageous determination and unswerving devotion to duty he displayed are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service.
