The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry), [then Captain] John S. Carrier (ASN: 0-1311606), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as S-3, 1st Battalion, 275th Infantry Regiment, 70th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in France. On 2 January 1945, at 0800 hours, at the height of a vicious enemy counterattack on Phillipsburg, France, Major Carrier dashed forty yards over bullet-swept, shell-blasted terrain to secure a bazooka and fire on an enemy machine gun strongpoint. Although enemy fire barely missed him, Major Carrier silenced this position and killed four Germans. He then manned a fifty caliber machine gun on a knocked-out vehicle and, despite hostile small arms fire which converged on him, silenced a second enemy machine gun strongpoint, killed four more enemy soldiers, wounded one, and aided in the capture of forty-eight Germans. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Carrier, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
