The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Commander George Sloan Bryan, United States Navy, for distinguished service in the line of his profession as Aide, Flag Secretary and Fleet Engineer Officer on the Staff of the Commander-in-Chief, U. S. Asiatic Fleet, and later as Assistant in charge of the Material Division of the Naval Overseas Transportation Service in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, involving complicated problems of co-ordination in out-fitting, alterations and repairs, and upkeep of vessels in that service, and of liaison with the U. S. Army and the U. S. Shipping Board.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Rear Admiral George Sloan Bryan, United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Hydrographer of the Navy from 7 December 1941 to 31 August 1945. Through the exercise of unlimited energy, great foresight and outstanding administrative ability, Rear Admiral Bryan directed the preparation and distribution of the vast number of charts, many of them new and special nature, which enabled the United States Fleet to operate. Displaying sound judgment and exceptional skill, he provided in addition navigational and air charts and publications on related matters in unprecedented numbers to the Navy, Air and Merchant Maritime establishments. His excellent performance of his exacting duties contributed materially to the prosecution of the war.
