The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Bernard Brons (ASN: 0-1052273), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 275th Infantry Regiment, 70th Infantry Division, on 8 January 1945, near Phillipsbourg, France. Leading a patrol into enemy territory, Lieutenant Brons was seriously wounded when his group was fired upon by heavy enemy machine gun fire. The position of his patrol having been revealed, Lieutenant Brons ordered it to withdraw. Realizing an attempt to carry him to safety would hamper the withdrawal, he further ordered that he be left behind, and gave his carbine to an unarmed member of his group. He was last seen crawling toward the enemy machine gun position. His gallantry reflects the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
