The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Lee Berwick (ASN: 0-446413), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Battalion S-3, 3d Battalion, 424th Infantry Regiment, 106th Infantry Division, in action on 16 December 1944, in Germany. When devastating fire from the enemy concealed in a cluster of houses raked his battalion’s position, he led a platoon to dislodge the hostile troops. Unwilling to sacrifice his men in a costly assault, he advanced alone toward the enemy and demanded their surrender. Confused and demoralized the entire garrison emerged and surrendered. Their capitulation yielded one hundred seven prisoners, and seventeen Americans, held captive. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
