The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Edward J. Zamkowski (ASN: 36347850), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 3d Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 22 September 1944, at ****, Holland. When the rest of the unit was pinned down by terrifically heavy enemy fire, Private First Class Zamkowski quickly moved to an exposed position and opened fire upon the enemy with effective and demoralizing results. The Germans, caught completely by surprise, were unable to prevent him from advancing and his withering machine gun fire forced them to retreat. Private First Class Zamkowski’s daring attack forced the enemy to desert strongly fortified positions without further resistance. His courage and disregard for his own personal safety reflects great credit upon himself and the Airborne Forces.
