The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Sergeant David Franklin Reagan (ASN: 6918153), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 22d Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in action on 22 June 1944, in France. Sergeant Reagan’s battalion was temporarily cut off from the rest of the regiment by enemy patrols which had infiltrated into the battalion’s position. Sergeant Reagan volunteered to assist in trying to get a supply convoy, carrying ammunition and food, through to the isolated troops. Two previous efforts had failed, one having been turned back by a concentration of machine gun fire. With disregard for his personal safety, Sergeant Reagan continued to press forward in the face of enemy artillery and sniper fire, encouraging his men and assisting in staving off two enemy attacks on the convoy itself. In the latter attempt by the enemy to stop the convoy, Sergeant Reagan was killed. He gave his life in order to help to get the convoy through to the front line troops, where supplies were vitally needed. The high qualities of gallantry, initiative, determination and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Reagan were in keeping with the finest military traditions.
