The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Roy Yates (ASN: 35291332), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 3d Battalion, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 23 December 1944, near ****, Belgium. Engaged in manning an important outpost with his squad, Private First Class Yates so inspired the men by his courage that a heavy enemy attack was repulsed and penetration to the main position stopped. Although all but three of the squad became casualties, and he himself was wounded by the hail of enemy mortar and small arms fire, Private First Class Yates urged and led his men in such a desperate defense of their position that the enemy were driven back. While he lost his life in this gallant struggle against a numerically superior enemy, the gallantry and courage displayed by Private First Class Yates were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Airborne Forces.
