The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Medical Corps), [then Captain] Joseph Edward Walther, United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action while serving with the SEVENTH Air Force at Midway on 2 June 1942. Major Walther was on duty as Flight Surgeon during the latter portion of the period from 26 May 1942 to 5 June 1942, during which time the Japanese attacked the Midway Islands. During the attack on 2 June 1942, Major Walther, with complete disregard for his personal safety, exposed himself to enemy fire on numerous occasions to treat wounded personnel. His courage and skill under bombardment were above and beyond the call of duty and were in keeping with the gallant traditions of the service.
