The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Specialist Fifth Class Thomas Patrick O’Donnell (ASN: RA-56323103), United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Etain Air Base, France, on 2 August 1965. On that date Specialist Fifth Class and Mrs. O’Donnell were driving through the Main Street of the Trailer Court when Specialist Fifth Class O’Donnell observed two small children standing near the front door of trailer #173 and smoke pouring out of the open door. Specialist Fifth Class O’Donnell got the two children away from the trailer and upon hearing a baby crying inside, entered with complete disregard for his own safety and despite dense smoke and intense flames, unhesitatingly worked his way by feel to the point where the baby was located and removed the baby to safety. If there had been a delay of even a moment or two, it is almost certain the baby would have been a fatality. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellow man, Specialist Fifth Class O’Donnell has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
