The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Seith Wheeler (ASN: 0-475893), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 2 February 1945, about one mile from ****, Germany. First Lieutenant Wheeler commanded the platoon which led the assault on the Siegfried Line at ****, Germany. When his lead scout was halted by an enemy machine gun emplaced inside the dragon’s teeth, First Lieutenant Wheeler moved up with a bazooka team. In crawling up to the emplacement, the bazooka gunner was killed and the assistant gunner and First Lieutenant Wheeler were wounded. First Lieutenant Wheeler refused to be evacuated, but remained at the head of his platoon for five hours until the company’s mission of securing a portion of the town was successfully completed. His bravery and determination were a magnificent example to his men and contributed materially to the accomplishment of the division’s mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
