The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Charles A. Webster (ASN: 35450001), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 681st Glider Field Artillery Battalion, 17th Airborne Division, near Buschanshof, Germany, on 24 March 1945. During the airborne crossing of the Rhine River, Sergeant Webster landed by glider in a field swept by enemy small arms and machine gun fire. He observed an enemy strongpoint from which fire was being directed against incoming gliders and troops already aground. Without regard for his own safety, he rushed the enemy position and diverted their fire upon himself. Although mortally wounded by his heroic act, Sergeant Webster enabled his battery to assemble and quickly render artillery support to the infantry units. His gallant action was in keeping with the highest standards of the Military Service.
