The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) David A. Wearley (ASN: 0-1304469), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 26 September 1944, near ****, Holland. While the company was in a defensive position, First Lieutenant Wearley, Weapons Platoon Leader, went forward to check the company’s front line positions and judge the range to suitable targets to give the most effective support with his mortars. The enemy attacked, wounding two officers commanding rifle platoons. Without hesitation, First Lieutenant Wearley moved to the right flank and assumed active command of a rifle platoon. He fired a bazooka, checked the advancing enemy, and moved out into the open and stopped a tank with bazooka fire. He later reorganized his positions and personally led a counter-attack that successfully stopped the enemy and pushed them back. The company’s position on the ridge was held securely through First Lieutenant Wearley’s aggressive leadership, alertness, initiative and devotion to duty. He was an inspiration to his men and contributed greatly to the successful frustration of the enemy attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
