The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technical Sergeant Herbert P. Urschel (ASN: 35044503), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 401st Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 19 June 1944, near ****, France. Technical Sergeant Urschel, with total disregard for personal safety and without orders, single-handedly stormed a machine gun nest which had pinned his platoon to the ground, killing the crew of five men with grenade and sub-machine gun fire, and thus knocking out the gun. This heroic action enabled the platoon to advance and successfully accomplish its mission. Technical Sergeant Urschel’s extraordinary heroism and courage in the face of fire, devotion to duty and unflinching gallantry in the face of all odds were an inspiration to all who followed him and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
