Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 16 (February 10, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Charles Tribby (ASN: 0-1016438), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 740th Tank Battalion, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 4 January 1945, near ****, Belgium. Without thought for his own safety during the attack in ****, First Lieutenant Tribby repeatedly left the protection of his vehicle to better direct the fire of assisting tank destroyers. On one occasion he dismounted from his tank and guided others into positions from which one finally destroyed the enemy tank. On a second occasion, he repeated the maneuver and guided his tanks into position to disable another enemy tank. His fearless disregard of the extremely heavy enemy small arms, artillery and tank fire in this battle, coupled with cool, efficient leadership at a critical time, enabled both tanks and infantry to advance and seize their objective. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 38 (March 21, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Charles Tribby (ASN: 0-1016438), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 740th Tank Battalion, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 5 January 1945 at ***, Belgium. First Lieutenant Tribby, while moving his tank platoon through town, dismounted from his tank and advanced on foot pointing out targets to his tank commanders as well as to the supporting infantry. At one stubborn strongpoint, First Lieutenant Tribby, with utter disregard for his own safety, entered the house and captured eight enemy. Moving his tanks to the edge of the town, he then directed fire which knocked out two enemy tanks. On 7 January 1945, he led the attack on ****, Belgium. The attack was being held up by three enemy tanks. First Lieutenant Tribby advanced on foot, reconnoitered a route to move his tanks forward and brought effective fire on the enemy forcing them to withdraw. By his aggressive and courageous action the capture of the town was greatly facilitated. In these actions the conduct of First Lieutenant Tribby was an inspiration to all and was a credit to the traditions of the Armed Forces.
