The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Lee C. Travelstead (ASN: 0-1309987), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 2 February 1945, near ****, Germany. Captain Travelstead, commanding the lead company in the attack on the town, by his utter fearlessness inspired his company to move forward against intense small arms and mortar fire, across 1,200 yards of exposed terrain and take a key position in the Siegfried Line. The Company, in crossing the open terrain under the fire from numerous fortifications, came under small arms fire. Captain Travelstead was wounded in the shoulder but refused to be evacuated until he had oriented his second in command. However, before he could be moved, he was again hit by small arms fire in the side. The gallantry of this officer displayed during the attack was the prime factor in the success of the battalion’s accomplishment of its mission. His actions reflect great credit upon the United States Airborne Forces.
