The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Howard P. Tiffen (ASN: 34546303), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 3 January 1945, near ****, Belgium. When two companies were pinned down during an attack by intense enemy artillery, mortar and machine gun fire, Staff Sergeant Tiffen repeatedly exposed himself to point out targets of opportunity to his men. Locating one well hidden German machine gun position, he, with no regard for his personal safety, charged recklessly toward it, tossing hand grenades to eliminate this key to the enemy defenses and captured three prisoners. As a result of this courageous action the company was able to resume its advance. The gallantry and aggressiveness displayed by Staff Sergeant Tiffen were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Airborne Forces.
