The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant John H. Stubbs (ASN: 34480487), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 30 January 1945, near ****, Germany. When his platoon leader and platoon sergeant became casualties, Staff Sergeant Stubbs took command of the platoon and despite intense fire which reduced his command to only four men, reached the objective. Cornering sixty-five enemy in a group of buildings, he returned six hundred yards under heavy fire to guide tanks forward. After killing six Germans, whom he had flushed from concealed positions, Staff Sergeant Stubbs persuaded the balance of the enemy to surrender. The gallantry, courage and aggressiveness displayed by Staff Sergeant Stubbs were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Airborne Forces.
