The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Dave R. Stokely (ASN: 0-362674), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 2d Battalion, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 29 September 1944 near ****, Holland. Captain Stokely, Battalion Executive Officer, with the Battalion Commander, completed plans for an attack at dawn 29 September 1944. At about 2230 the forward CP was subjected to an enemy mortar barrage and both the Battalion Commander and Captain Stokely were wounded. The Battalion Commander was moved to his rear command post. Captain Stokely had an enlisted man dress the wound in his right forearm and refused to go to the rear area for adequate medical care. It was not until 1400, after that attack had been executed and was successful, that Captain Stokely consented to go to the aid station. Despite weakness from loss of blood, he remained with the leading elements of the battalion, and coordinated the efforts of the companies. His unfailing devotion to duty, courage and utter disregard for personal safety were prime factors in successful completion of the operation. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
