The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Airman’s Medal (Posthumously) to Airman First Class Robert Eugene Markwalter (AFSN: AF-14675107), United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at English Bay, Ascension Island, South Atlantic, on 15 January 1966. On that date, Airman Markwalter heard a fellow airman, being pulled out to sea and in grave danger of drowning, call for assistance. With complete disregard for his own safety and despite heavy wave action and strong undertow, Airman Markwalter unhesitatingly entered the surf and persevered in his successful humanitarian rescue efforts at the sacrifice of his life. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellow man, Airman Markwalter has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
