The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class David Thomas Barnes (ASN: RA-11985519), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Barnes distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 28 April 1968, while serving as a rifleman with Company C, 2d Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Division, during a combat mission in the A Shau Valley, Republic of Vietnam. Upon spotting an enemy ambush force, Specialist Barnes exposed himself to the hostile fire as he led his platoon to foil the enemy ambush. While advancing, Specialist Barnes was wounded but continued on. At this time he was injured again but still continued to engage the insurgents until he was mortally wounded. Specialist Barnes’ gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
