The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Adam M. Smith (ASN: 35233166), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery A, 456th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion, 82d Airborne Division, in action on the night of 5 October 1944, near ****, Holland. At about 2330 hours on 5 October 1944, several rounds of artillery came into our position, landing in and around the number one gun. One of the first rounds landed near the ammunition pit igniting discarded powder bags. Had they been permitted to burn they would have given away the location of our battery position. While engaged in extinguishing the flames, several more rounds of artillery were fired into the positions endangering the life of Private Smith. Private Smith’s gallant action in this emergency is exemplary and of the highest standards of the Army.
