Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 61 (November 30, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Frank S. Slugai (ASN: 32240268), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 19 September 1944 at ****, Holland. Private Slugai, Company D, 2d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, was a member of a patrol which led the attack on the important railroad bridge across the Waal River. During the attack a group of Germans suddenly detached themselves from the main group and fired on the left flank with a 20-mm. gun. Private Slugai, with a group of men, was dispatched to knock out this threat. The enemy pinned down his men, but Private Slugai, using only natural cover, worked around to the flank where he put fire on the enemy gun position. All this time he was exposed to enemy small arms and 20-mm. fire. He pinned the enemy down and the remainder of his group was able to knock out the gun with Gammon Grenades. This action erased an obstacle and the attack was accomplished with reduced casualties. Private Slugai has participated in all the regiment’s combat mission and in many patrols for both regimental and battalion S-2 in a superior manner. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
