The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Warnie R. Sims (ASN: 12003827), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 29 January 1945, at ****, Belgium. Private First Class Sims was on a two-man machine gun outpost when the German infantry counterattacked through his position. Although heavily outnumbered, he refused to withdraw, and stayed by his post. When his companion was wounded, Private First Class Sims took over the gun, repeatedly reloading and firing. When the counterattack was finally repulsed, seventeen dead and eight wounded of the enemy were found in front of Private First Class Sims’ position. His great display of courage and his refusal to withdraw in the face of a vastly superior force was a main factor in the ultimate defeat of the enemy attack. His heroic actions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Airborne Forces.
