The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technical Sergeant Charles P. Shutack (ASN: 35500286), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 401st Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 9 June 1944, in ****, France. In preparation for an assault against the front of Company F, the enemy commenced with heavy machine gun and artillery fire. Without hesitating, Technical Sergeant Shutack determined to counterattack and led off a charge against the hostile positions. He was killed in the crossfire of the two machine guns. His courageous example so inspired his men that they followed him and neutralized the enemy gun positions and what might have resulted in an enemy penetration of a thinly manned front was converted to a successful assault. Technical Sergeant Shutack’s courage, initiative and exemplary leadership were in keeping with the high traditions of the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
