The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Joseph L. Shealy (ASN: 0-377417), United States Army, for gallantry in action on ****, 1943, north of ****, Italy. Lieutenant Shealy, 81-mm. Mortar Platoon Leader, Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, during the heat of the enemy attack, after artillery observers were forced to withdraw, remained at the Command Post and then moved closer to the enemy under heavy fire to gain better observation and direct his mortar fire more effectively. The enemy attack of eight hours duration was thus successfully repelled. Extremely mountainous terrain had made it impossible for supporting artillery to bring fire upon the enemy, and Lieutenant Shealy’s action contributed materially to the success of the unit mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
