The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Joseph J. Sandy (ASN: 33937646), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 10 April 1945, at ****, Germany. When his platoon was pinned down by enemy rifle and 20-mm. gun fire, Private Sandy, Machine Gunner, on his own initiative carried a complete machine gun and ammunition to a position from which he brought effective fire on the main enemy positions. There was no cover of concealment available, but Private Sandy, with great aggressiveness, set up his gun and diverted most of the enemy fire to himself. He was fatally wounded. Private Sandy’s courage enabled his platoon to maneuver successfully and reflects credit upon the high traditions of the United States Airborne Forces.
