Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 33 (September 15, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Richard W. Rozzell (ASN: 14097520), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 3d Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on or about 10 July 1943, southeast of ****. Private First Class Rozzell, with eight other privates and one officer, crept to within close range of an enemy column which had halted for a rest. Discovered by the enemy, the officer used a rocket launcher to destroy an armored car in which all occupants were killed. Private First Class Rozzell and his comrades effectively covered the withdrawal of the rocket launcher team with rifle fire and created such confusion among the enemy that it refused to exploit its numerical superiority. In this action Private First Class Rozzell lost his life, having displayed high courage and devotion to duty that gave no thought to self in the performance of his task. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
