Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 64 (December 13, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Clifton W. Rivers (ASN: 18015045), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 4 July 1944, near ****, France. Sergeant Rivers’ unit was unable to maneuver to right or left and was immobilized by concentrated enemy machine gun fire. He voluntarily exposed himself to this fire and headed for a dry creek bottom which would afford him a route of approach to the enemy machine gun nest. While en route, he encountered two enemy soldiers armed with machine pistols. While knocking them out with his BAR he received a head wound from their fire. Still not having completed his self-appointed mission, he crawled up to within ten yards of the machine gun nest and threw two fragmentation grenades into the enemy dugout. This action enabled his unit to continue on their mission. Sergeant Rivers’ actions reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
