The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers) Warren A. Riffle (ASN: 0-453233), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 307th Airborne Engineer Battalion, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 10 July 1943, five miles northwest of ****. Lieutenant Riffle, commanding a platoon of the 307th Airborne Engineer Battalion, together with 15 men of his command, did approach a group of German *** Tanks which were being utilized as pill-boxes to prevent the advance of his troops. In the face of intense machine gun fire, he personally advanced to within 25 yards of one of the tanks to attempt to silence its machine gun. In this gallant action, Lieutenant Riffle acquitted himself in a manner reflecting credit on himself and on his country. He lost his life in the action. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
